Resco Self Storage LLC was formed in 1995 as a vehicle for the partners to take advantage of their aggregate real estate experience to develop high-quality self-storage facilities to meet a growing demand. In 1996 Resco entered into a joint venture agreement with Shurgard Storage Centers, Inc. a NYSE storage REIT, which eventually grew to operate or own over 600 self storage facilities in the U.S. and Western Europe. Resco operated as Shurgard's exclusive developer in the Southern California counties. Resco acquired, entitled and constructed 14 Shurgard facilities totaling approximately one million square feet in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties. In 2006, Public Storage acquired Shurgard Centers by merger and through its wholly owned affiliate, Shurgard Storage Centers, LLC, has taken over operation of the previous Shurgard facilities. Resco continues to share ownership with Public Storage in the 14 facilities that were developed under Resco's joint venture relationship with Shurgard.
